In Melbourne, Taco Bills have a monopoly on Mexican food with 18 restaurants. This is outrageous because not only is the food boring tasteless crap that usually only changes in shape depending on what dish you order, it is also ridiculously overpriced. But still people go and seem to love it.
Los Amates is not Tex Mex. It is Mexican owned and as far as I know about as close as you’re going to get to real Mexican food at a restaurant in Melbourne.

For starters we had ‘Sopes’ and ‘Nachos’. Sopes are masa cases (little tarts) topped with black beans, salsa verde (chili & herb), salsa roja (tomato) and lettuce. The nachos came with the usual salsa roja, guacamole, sour cream, cheese plus black beans. When then had the ‘Enchiladas de Pollo con Mole’ which is a few small chicken enchiladas topped with mole (sweet black bean sauce). It came with a side of frijoles (kidney beans) with fetta, guacamole, tomato rice and salad. The ‘Budin Azteca’ was amazing, it was kind of like a claypot pie with a tortilla lid. It was filled with vegetables and beans and was covered in mole and fetta. It came with frijoles, guacamole and salad on the side. The tortilla of the ‘Vegetarian Burrito’ was like none I’ve had before. It had been made at the restaurant and was so soft – completely different to any store bought “old el paso” brand. The burrito had been baked and was topped with salsa roja. It also came with frijoles, guacamole and salad on the side.
An important note about the beans, they are real whole beans. They are not a mashed refried tasteless paste.
Everything was well priced and good quality. We had strawberry, lemon and mango margaritas, they were all made with fresh fruit and the strawberry was especially excellent. We only ordered one dessert, a ‘Creme Caramel Tart’, which I didn’t try but apparently was good and I’ve heard that the more traditional desserts are also good.
